Earl Warren:
“I hate banks.
They do nothing positive for anybody except take care of themselves.
They’re first in with their fees and first out when there’s trouble.”

For all the many complaints and opinions about the Recession in Knysna, it’s disappointing that few people actually know how and why it happened.

Knowing why so many Knysna businesses have gone under (or being replaced by national franchises) should be something that we not only seek but also have taught to us by our local government. As they’ve repeatedly proven, the Knysna Municipality, (DA, COPE and ANC councillors) feels no obligation to the public it’s suppose to serve unless it’s to repeatedly present the misguided notion of pretending that problems don’t exist so as not to damage our all-important, yet lessening, tourist industry.  If you don’t acknowledge the problem, you cannot fix it!

As much as they are at fault, we, as the public, are far more at fault if we do not investigate for ourselves. Knowing why we are in the shit is one of the most important things we can do. We not only have a responsibility to our friends, families and self but also to one another. You and i are interlinked. If we don’t change things, we will fall together.

As a precursor to the bigger picture, i composed a small story to ram home just how stupid and abusive the current financial system (that rules our lives) is. I ask you to think, share and alter the limited mindset you’ve accepted those before us as well as the current crop of banks, insurance companies and corrupt politicians (especially if they’re South African). Plett’s DA Speaker Loses Big Time

justice.fund draft.logo Pletts DA Speaker Loses Big TimeJohan Brummer, the controversial Speaker and DA Councillor for the Plettenberg Bay Municipality, applied for a blanket interdict against local councillors (although his focus was really against the ANC). He also applied for an interdict against Municipal Law Enforcement. Judge Cloete delivered his judgement yesterday, September 28 2011. Result: Brummer lost on all accounts, making this a big victory for JEF (The Justice & Equality Fund), the opposing counsel.

How is this relevant to Knysna? What happens politically in Plett, our neighbour whose a scant 30km away, can affect us. The political situation in Plett has been a media circus much discussed in Knysna. Instability, if allowed to continue, will spread.  Plett is one of those places that has the ability to become the spark that starts the fire in South Africa. I have no desire for a Garden Route afire. I prefer flowers.

I’d much rather politicians get over their bickering and get on with their job to make life better for all. But that’s not going to happen lest truth comes first. This case is a perfect example of public perception being lead astray by the media. I’ve no doubt that there’s wrong on both sides but here, in Knysna, the people i spoke to were overwhelmingly on the side of the DA with regards this situation. This proves, as i’ve been stating for months, that the DA is fallible too. ALL politicians, not only the ANC, need to be held accountable.

Furthermore, the costs involved in this court case may run as high as half a million rand [i was later informed that it'd be nearer a million]. With many going hungry or losing their businesses, and money running out for road repairs and more, the Knysna DA cannot afford to put us in a situation where they can be sued and lose. They lose = the public pays.  The DA needs to shirk the white knight fantasy they’ve fed to the media and instead become practical, helping hands in the dirt where most of us are. This has to be accompanied by truth, transparency and a willingness to meet and discuss matters with local organizations and involved public.

Judge Cloete’s comments sum up Plett’s DA Speaker as undemocratic, unconstitional and  dishonest. That’s far too close for comfort when compared to the Knysna DA’s actions so far.
