I am not ashamed to be White. There’s been much fanfare in the media after Samantha Vice’s paper on white guilt and retreat. It has stimulated debate amongst white intellectuals but the bigger challenge would be making the average Helen or Jacob on the street reflect on themselves. Given where I stay, i’ve had much to reflect on. I live in Knysna, a gorgeous yet troubled town on the Garden Route. Economic and social contrasts are more visible here than in the cities. I’m a huge fan of the Mail & Guardian (M&G). They pissed the NP back in the day and the ANC now – that’s democracy! The media is suppose to be the Fourth Estate, a check and balance tool to promote more responsible government because, as you know, power corrupts (that goes for pink and blue people too). M&G has an offshoot called Thought Leader which dresses my inbox daily. I suggest you subscribe. If my few words don’t persuade you, then maybe these from John Vlismas, South Africa’s famous comedian, will. Here he takes on Darren Scott, Julius Malema, … ‘Click here to read full article…’
I love these words of activist/author Arundhati Roy! This is what the definition of being human should be. “To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget.”'Click here to read full article...'

A Street Kid Diary Every raindrop hits me! In winter night, my skin reads the newspaper and I awake educated to the street The cold colds The robot beckons me to beg a coin Dressing in my unhappy face (they don’t know that the unhappiest shows nothing), I jostle with the Coca-Cola man to get my tax relief Later, I’ve got my bread and single cigarette and I’m playing hide-and-hide with the older boys Thank God, they don’t see the angel in my pocket so soon I’m sniffing her all the way to Heaven Sure, I’ve got no shoes and … ‘Click here to read full article…’
