IMPORTANT: The crowning of the new Knysna Town Council WILL NO LONGER TAKE PLACE TOMORROW MORNING. The meeting, which is open to the public, has been postponed until 10am on Monday, August 15 2016.
Who will the coalition deal be with? Coalitions are more about trading than ideology or democracy.
The ACDP may have pissed off the DA in the week before the elections but politics can make bedfellows of beasts that consider themselves conservative versus liberal enemies.
It was rumoured that Velile Waxa, the independent from Ward 4, received assistance from the DA for his election campaign. If true, it’d make sense to broaden the relationship. After all, his winning that ward was one of the biggest reasons for the DA one-upping the ANC. He’d be a better deal for the DA than COPE as he’d likely ask for less.
Waxa, having received more votes, makes himself a better bet for the DA than the Knysna Unity Congress.
COPE’s Elrick van Aswegen would be a logical bet if it wasn’t for the fact that i’m wondering, as suggested above, that he’ll ask for for too much e.g. mayoral position. Maybe he settles for less but, if he doesn’t, that could find him off the Mayoral Committee too. The latter would be tragic as there are hardly any qualified councillors to carry responsibilies that include heading up the Section 80 Committees.
I’m betting that the final coalition deal carries the condition of Eleanore Bouw-Spies as Mayor.
If she becomes Mayor, then the only experienced people the DA will have left will be Peter Myers, Mark Willemse and Georlene Wolmarans. I’m being lenient by calling Myers and Willemse “experienced” as they’ve only been in the game for a bit more than a year. It takes far longer than that to get educated in the position (it’s a very tough job for any who wish to do it properly).
But lets count those as 3 so that we can get onto the next problem i.e. the MAYCO and Speaker positions, excluding the Mayor, require 5 councillors.
We’re, again, likely to find weak councillors being led by the few that are strong. That proved to be bad for Knysna last time round.
Even worse for Knysna is if ex-Mayor Wolmarans becomes Speaker. The Speaker is responsible for guarding the morality of all councillors. That means investigating them when need be. I consider her as a bad choice for that position because i expect her to be eventually investigated (from outside) for her role in all the nonsense that took place the past 5 years. She may have escaped the DA chopping process but has more to answer for than anyone else left behind.
Myers is a lawyer so he’d get up to speed on the Speaker position quicker than most others. Problem is that he can be more bullheaded than impartial. Opposing that negativity is that if he’s Speaker, he can’t be a Section 80 chairperson, a position where he is greatly needed.
No matter what’s decided (for us), there are very challenging times ahead!
