Germany is experiencing a massive revolution towards clean energy. Amazingly, “81% of citizens trust local municipal utilities while only 26% of citizens trust large corporations.” Communities are actually buying back the energy grid.
Germany is in the midst of an ambitious energy transition movement, known as the Energiewende, which seeks to eliminate fossil fuels as energy sources, phase out nuclear energy, and increase the use of renewable energy sources. According to a 2013 survey by the German Consumer Advice Center, 93% of citizens are aware of the Energiewende and more than 80% support its goals.
This shows you what active citizens and responsible government can achieve. I’m hoping that it inspires some of you to get more involved in all Knysna’s local government affairs and, nationally, for you to oppose South Africa’s irresponsibly, greedy steps towards nuclear.
