I had a positive internet connectivity experience with free Digital Village wi-fi in the Knysna CBD hotspot yesterday. The day began poorly because, again, the tower was down, and i could not connect. I went to Knysna Mall in an attempt to work but connection was 2G and not 3G as is needed. First 5hrs of the day wasted.
Frustrated because i have so much work to do and keep falling further behind, i decided to spend my last money making myself happy with a Windhoek beer and an awesome toasted sandwich at Grillers.
When i realised i was R5 short, i was going to change my order BUT THE CASHIER REFUSED AND USED HER TIPS TO PAY IN THE DIFFERENCE!!!! That’s was a gesture more awesome than a sandwich can ever be!
With no expectations, i asked if their wi-fi was working and they said they were having problems with Telkom whose line kept on dropping (their tills rely on it) but suggested i try Digital Village, the new wi-fi hotspot service installed by the Western Cape government. AND IT WORKED, LIKE MAGIC.
Digital Village has a daily limit but i managed to read all my mails and all the links they involved. Wikipedia is available after your limit is reached. I don’t know where you will purchase them but data bundles at reduced rates will be available soon. Speed was better than any coffee shop in town (even when their wi-fi is actually working).
Try it out next time you’re at Grillers or Africa Bean.
It’s also available on the Knysna Waterfront though one person said the connection was dropping after they logged in. Sure it will get fixed so tell me if you find it working.
They are also available in the Sedgefield CBD, Smutsville, Concordia, Hornlee and Rheenendal. Look out for that wi-fi connection – DV DIGITAL VILLAGE. If you live in one of those areas, please tell me if it’s already working and in what streets.
Well done to the Western Cape Provincial Government!
