At the March 26 Council Meeting, under the reports and communications by Mayor Georlene Wolmarans section, she tabled the functions, meetings and workshops she attended over the previous month. This normally involves humdrum affairs as most were this time i.e. school visits, Opening of the Dias Festival in Mosselbay, Food Garden Awards, picnic at Pledge Square etc.
The notable exception was on February 11 when she attended the Chinese New Year Celebrations hosted by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China at the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town.
COPE Councillor Elrick Van Aswegen questioned her as to what the benefit was to Knysna. She never had an answer for that but quickly covered up by saying that she’d done so at her expense. Van Aswegen made a very valid response, asking why it was then included as part of the Executive Mayor’s report i.e. in her official Knysna role. He never got a response that answered and Speaker Eleonor Spies moved onto the next item on the agenda.
The world i perceive places social circles, politics and big business ahead of our rights. Doing one’s job is obviously not a prerequisite for re-employment or promotion but maybe hobnobbing with ‘bigger folk’ is the way to get ahead as a politician. Who organised the invite for Wolmarans (and will she show us proof)? Who else from the DA in Cape Town attended?
Does this give any credit to the rumour that Wolmaran’s is seeking a position in provincial government? She’d never answer my questions but hopefully someone will ask her.
