2016 Knysna Women’s 7s Rugby is postponed until next month after Knysna Municipality pulled out of the tournament AGAIN.
The highly anticipated tournament has a core focus of highlighting the problem of rape & violence against women & children. 8 provincial, 8 club and 16 school teams (480 participants) were confirmed to attend the 2016 event. This included SA’s top female referees.
It was a very sad situation when we had to cancel and postpone the event.
We also lost our provincial teams as most of the provincial sides wanted to use the tournament to prepare for the National 7s tournament later in October month.
During the 2015 Youth Summit, the youth of Hornlee identified Sports Tourism as one of the priorities to bring people to our community and give our local businesses a slight push.
Last year, the same happened with 6 of Africa’s top international teams already secured to take part – we had to cancel that event.
The Knysna Municipality also kicked us out of the 2016 Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival Rugby tournament with an empty promise of support for our 7s tournament. We know now that under the current leadership and administration, we can’t count on the Knysna Municipality.
Everyone will tell you what good work they are doing, but unless they need you, don’t try asking for their help.
We will now, with our limited resources, host a smaller tournament with only local and surrounding school girls and club teams on the 5th of November 2016.
