Small businesses, which seem to be still struggling in a stagnant economy, will likely be hurt the the most.
Below is a screenshot of the latest Council agenda. It shows Knysna Municipality’s intended increases from July this year and then the proposed increases the subsequent two years.
The irony is that Knysna’s budget grew from half a billion to R900-million in the past 5 years. If i recall correctly, we’re sitting with R125-million in debt and intend borrowing another R23-million in the coming year despite Province being concerned at our monetary situation.
You won’t need to tighten your belt if you sell your pants…
…and all the clean audits in the world will not wipe Knysna’s troubles clean.
There may be world situations out of our control but here at home, where it matters most, it must be realised that there will be negative consequences to citizens who continue to refuse to get involved in local government.
