In a world that were fair and in a democracy that truly represented us, The People, Georlene Wolmarans would not have become the DA Mayor of Knysna. Now that the Helen Zille/Patricia de Lille deal has concluded, i can at least hope that we’ll have a new mayor after the 2016 municipal elections.
Why do i criticise Georlene again? Or maybe the question should be why don’t i criticise her daily?
I was pleased that the Knysna Municipality got some ratepayer information flow on the go when i read an on online ‘Council News’ newsletter. I’ve never seen one before so i’m assuming it’s the first. Of course, true to bad government form, i never received it directly (they may be readers but, apparently, not fans).
What peeved me was the ironic news at the very top:
‘Taking a firm stance against corruption and fraud in the municipal environment, Council recently approved a recommendation to enter into a partnership with the Eden District Municipality to establish an anti-fraud and corruption hotline.
Executive Mayor Cllr Georlene Wolmarans says the establishment of the hotline gives the general public the opportunity to report their suspicions of fraud, theft and corruption anonymously. “They will be able to communicate openly and without fear of intimidation or victimisation as all cases will be treated confidentially.”
She said the hotline is externally accredited to the forensic audit and investigation firm, KPMG and will be called the KPMG ethics line. Calls to the hotline are free from any Telkom line. “It will be manned by KPMG personnel 24 hours a day, seven days a week and calls are fielded by experienced call centre agents versed in all 11 official languages. All reported information will immediately be captured onto a call sheet and transmitted directly to a designated person appointed by KPMG.”
Wolmarans said that callers should provide as much information as possible for the effective investigation of allegations. “They will be provided with a reference number and will be able to track the progress. We have various measures in place already, including an email address to report suspicious activities, firstname.lastname@example.org. Adding this independently run hotline once again reiterates our zero tolerance stance in this regard.” CALL 0800 21 47 64.’
Why ironic? In ‘Zille & De Lille’s Deal, Eden’s Naughty DA Mayor and the Ironic Anti-Corruption Hotline’, i clearly showed that their anti-corruption stance and hotline don’t apply to them. I gave solid information but never received a call back. And Wessie van der Westhuizen, the DA Mayor of Eden District (which controls the Garden Route and more) still walks, defying logic, justice and sincerity.
This makes the anti-criminal position by Georlene Wolmarans more a PR move by the Western Cape Government than honesty. Or it’s a hypocritical way to catch crooked ANC members whilst ignoring crooked DA members.
DA supporters, this is not an ANC statement (Zuma’s financial rape of our country is unforgivable). It’s an I-Hate-Corruption statement. If you love your party, fix it from within. The same sense should apply to every political aficionado.
All crooks should go to jail! And, if they’re in a position of public trust, such as a politician or a municipal employee, they should serve an extra sentence for treason. We have to root out corruption genuinely!
