I asked the Knysna Municipality to please provide the reasons for Director Town Planning & Development Mike Maughan-Brown’s resignation. As he is arguably the second most powerful person in our local government, his resignation will have impact on us.
Unfortunately, Christopher Bezuidenhoudt, the Manager of Communications, chose to not provide requested reasoning and only repeat what i obviously already knew:
By direction of the Acting Municipal Manager we acknowledge receipt of your e-mail the contents of which have been noted.
We can confirm Mr Maughan-Brown’s resignation. However, the letter is a confidential Human Resources document, placed on his personal personnel file and is not available for public disclosure. If and when necessary, the municipality will issue statement.

It’s strange that there has been leaks before a press release – these things are normally planned.
If the resignation only happened now, why was it done when Municipal Manager Grant Easton wasn’t available (obviously so, as an Acting Municipal Manager is referred to).
Is there something more afoot? Is this a resignation or a negotiation?
Time will tell.
1303pm: Correction – i’d previously stated one month’s notice but it was in fact two months.
