I was impressed to read about Oakhill School’s plan to build their students with a 400km, physical and mental challenge in 2012. If you follow the link to the press release below, Headmaster Shane Kidwell presents the aim of the Oakhill Odyssey eloquently.
My applause is for more blunt reasons. Kids of today have it too easy and the result is often quite shocking when in the company of their parents. The Playstation Generation, mostly white children, are too mollycoddled. There’s an enormous “I Want, I Get” attitude that lacks an appreciation accompaniment.
I’d give anything for the return of parents insisting on part-time jobs for their teenagers. But that’s a world that’s almost forgotten. Right now, i can at least say, “Kudos to Oakhill!”. I hope they can hear my clapping from here.
