Protestors hijacked his speech at the IEC event that’s was live the past hour. 4 young women stood silently between him and the guests. Their handwritten signs included “KHANGA”, “REMEMBER KHWEZI” and “I AM I in 3”. I don’t know what the fourth was.
Security was, i assume, in a catch-22. If they acted immediately, they may have caused a bigger disruption. So they waited… which inadvertently allowed media to get lots of photos whilst ignoring the president.
After Zuma’s speech, security moved in quickly. As soon as the protestors were taken out of view, there was shouting, female voices, presumably the protestors.
Apparently a protestor has tweeted that she’s ok. The EFF may have been involved.
The only reference i could find to “khanga” and the possible rape reference was to Fezekile Ntsukela Kuzwayo. Her nickname was Kwezi. She was the daughter of Zuma’s friend that alleged he raped her. Zuma said that she had worn a a wraparound cloth called a khanga and that she’d “asked for it (basically, invited him to have sex).
In 2006, he was found not guilty. Fezekile was put under pressure, forcing her to leave the country. She gained political asylum in Holland.
Is that what the protest was about? It seems so. Some protestors are to be loved for their bravery!
