The most controversial article of the year has surfaced on the Justice & Equality Front’s website. So controversial and damning that the author has chosen anonymity for their safety. It alleges that the DA orchestrated a campaign of violence in Bitou in 2007 which was aimed at wrestling power from the ANC. Names that have been linked include a who’s who of the Democratic Alliance; Theuns Botha, Memory Booysen, Alan Winde, Donald Grant, Johann Brummer and Liz Mundell. Bitou, famous for it’s beautiful beaches and infamous for its turbulent politics, encompasses 165km² along the Garden Route of South Africa. The last census took place in 2001 so current results reflect changes the past 10 years. Population is 39 000 on the graph at Stats SA yet when adding up the figures below, the population is 46 139. I have sent a query to Stats SA.

The fight for the Garden Route, between the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the African National Congress (ANC), is an uninspiring mess. The 2011 municipal elections resulted in the DA winning Knysna and Bitou (Plettenberg Bay). I, like others, had hoped that the DA would fulfill their election promises for truth, transparency and the rooting out of so-called corruption. Instead, to my dismay, the DA has run dictatorially from behind closed doors, occasionally stepping outside for a lie.
