WE NEED We need local political and municipal leaders who put an emphasis on public service, not self-service. We need political representation that puts us, the public, first (unclouded by provincial or national interests). We need Councillors who are willing to sign a commitment form… and be voted out of office if they fail in their duty to do their best to uphold their election goals. As a follow-on to ‘Politicians’ Salary Increase Vote = Quickest Council Meeting’, here’s the new upper limit salaries for Knysna’s politicians. The official description is the ‘Determination of Upper Limits of Salaries, Allowances and Benefits of Different Members of Municipal Councils’ under the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act 1998. As they’re paid retrospectively, they can vote not to receive the back-pay, before Financial year end, normally May (somewhere close to election time). Greed and hypocrisy were evident, more than ever, at the Knysna Special Council Meeting held on January 12 2016. To understand why i have that opinion, we need to first step back to the last Council meeting of 2015. The contentious issue then was the ISDF, the 30-year plan for Knysna and the request for more money for the controversial tender winners. DA Councillor Peter Myers rightfully requested that answers should be delivered to a Special Council Meeting early in January 2016.
