Human Settlements Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, says all provincial Human Settlement Departments will make 5% of their budget available for housing in the Knysna and Plettenberg Bay areas. This after devastating fires destroyed over 800 properties and caused hundreds of millions rand worth of damages. She met local government officials in Knysna on Thursday. Still coming to terms with the devastation, Thembile Plaatjie lost most of his house to the fire. Only one room survived, but his neighbours lost everything. There have been riots in Rheenendal which started last night and ran into today. Fires have been lit and, for a period, the Rheenendal Road was closed. A subscriber said that riot police and firemen from neighbouring towns were called in to assist. The cause of the protest is unknown but it might be because of wanted housing, a possible show of strength whilst the MEC for Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, is on tour of the Knysna Municipality. As blogged at ‘Government: No Houses for 10 Years’, Karatara (Knysna) has seemingly been abandoned by government. Here is the item, word for word, as it was on the agenda at the Knysna Council Meeting of May 31 2016. It is very disappointing that Municipal Manager Grant Easton’s recommendation was only to “note” the report. It would be more appropriate if he had recommended an emergency council meeting as soon as he received the news. The DA-led municipality of Bitou (Plettenberg Bay) and its mayor, Memory Booysen, have been accused by Phakie Mbali, the ANC Chief Whip, of being involved in major housing fraud in Ward 7 (Kranshoek/Harkerville/Kwanokhuthula).
