Morne Jonker’s rejects the Municipality’s media presentation on the causes of the Great Knysna Fire. He states, “The truth will surface!” On Facebook, his demand for accountability is receiving a lot of attention and support.
Johnny Snyman, also a resident, commented that, “Our friends lost their lives. Tony Johnston and Madré Johnston, and their boy little Michael, died on the day of his 3rd birthday – he never had a chance to become a grown man and neither did Madre have a chance to lay eyes upon her expected baby boy, she was only 5 weeks shy of bringing him into this world. They’re gone now and have no voice in this tragedy, but we have a voice and know this: There are some of us will not rest until the truth behind your lies have been exposed.”
This is what Jonker posted on his Facebook page:
“I want to alert everyone that the original smoldering fire in the Karatara River valley(Elandskraal area), was just above the river on a ridge. My picture was taken 22 April from my aircraft, and the drone pic was taken later (note dried out vegetation after few weeks of smoldering).
Compare this to the official report released yesterday, their photos imply a very different origin of the fire, ironically close to a human dwelling! Why? Knysna needs to know! This cannot be accepted.
I was there (and many Elandskraal farmers). A few times.
Even the Authorities admitted in May (with inspection) that the terrain was unfit for a human to walk or reach or even inspect (I agree). Now, suddenly, the report blames “human activity”. No no, I’m not buying it. The good people of Knysna need to know why the lightning strike report is being nearly ignored, and why the “human activity” report is being pushed to the fore? Some of us see where this is heading!
Time is going to bring out the truth.
MISLEADING THE PUBLIC
Yesterday’s media release was a very professionally thought out strategy to mislead the public away from the actual cause of the fire.
The original smoldering fire caused by lightning was given the necessary attention between April and 7th June. If the informed public can just listen to what was “not said”, then it is clear that here is a calculated effort to steer the argument towards blaming “human activity”( not arson).
Very little was reported on the original lightning strike of 12th April, causing weeks of underground smoldering fires, which were clearly the cause of the Great Fire.
Fire Chief Clint Manuel’s exact location of origin is incorrect. Their argument is guided to have the public think the fire started near the one home. Not true! The fire originated a couple of hundred meters “down the same ridge” where us pilots spotted and photographed the smoke in April.
The public need to ask only this one question? Why is there this concerted effort to not acknowledge the lightning strike as origin of fire?
The answer is because this smoldering fire was reported on various occasions from April to June, with no action taken. If the authorities who reasoned then, that the terrain was unfit for entry and inspection due to the thick indigenous forest and steep terrain, how can they now report there was “human activity” at origin of fire. This case is far from over.
You can quote me and call me and I will assist and help that the good Knysna people hear the truth.
My prediction is that there will be ongoing individual reports to come forth that will prove what has been said here. Why are they blaming this on human activity when they themselves confessed that they could not reach or access the area, even to inspect the smoldering fire?
TRUTH WILL SURFACE
Please my friends, read between their lines. The truth will surface. Knysna needs to know!
Attached is a split photo, the lower pic shows my shoe as I’m flying over the ridge, near the river, on 22 April 2017, the upper pic is one of the drone image taken a few weeks later, note the deterioration and drying out of vegetation in the drone pic, weeks after my pic.”

Update: Afriforum’s investigation into the fire has been released. It contradicts the government’s version.
