Premier Helen Zille and Mayor Eleanore Spies, where do you stand regarding offshore oil exploration?
Your silence about serious issues must stop. Either you’re our leaders or you’re not. If you choose leadership, please focus, this week, on the important topic of oil explorations off our coast.
WHAT’S YOUR POSITION?
The Western Cape and Eastern Cape coasts have been divided between different companies seeking oil and gas. Three years ago, there was deep sea drilling south of Mosselbay. Such activities fit the ANC’s goal of nature destroying energy extractions, from fracking to nuclear. President Jacob Zuma was clear with his intentions regarding offshore drilling: “Over the next 20 years, this could lead to the production of 300 000 barrels of oil and gas per day.”
I may disagree with our President but i’m as worried about not knowing exactly where the Democratic Alliance (DA) stands. Why have you and your party not adopted a visible position? Can objectors turn to you?
Yes, Helen, i’m aware of your 2013 ‘The Disappearing Dream Of Oil’ newsletter wherein you let James Lorimer (DA Shadow Minister of Mineral Resources) speak for you. It was pro-oil, existing to praise Petro SA whilst criticising the ANC for possible future theft of oil profits. I felt cynical, thinking that you were representing those who ‘anonymously’ donate hundreds of millions of rands annually to keep the DA running.
But your newsletter never addressed our environmentally sensitive coast and many voters are oblivious to where the DA stands on many important issues affecting our lives. There are some who strangely think you’re still a liberal party, against BEE and the last “great white hope”.
As for you, Eleanore, you’re the politician who ran an election on the promise of better communication then seemed to hide behind Deputy Mayor Peter Myers when controversy arose. You’ve failed to answer a never-ending storm of problems that included the forensic investigation into your husband and your unqualified friend being illegally appointed as Knysna Municipality’s Manager Communications.
OFFSHORE OIL EXPLORATION
But the immediate issue is the intended seismic blasting of a portion of the Pletmos Baisin which is roughly between Knysna and Jeffrey’s Bay. The deadline for objections is May 16 2017. Have you objected? Have you signed the petition that aims to protect the awesome natural beauty that delivers visitors to our home towns and tourism-based economies along this coast?
Will you help us protect the environment and our economy? Will you protect tourism, fishing, whistling dolphins and singing whales? Will you issue a press release?
If you disagree, supporting the ANC’s position and the DA’s globalisation leaning, will you, at the very least, be honest so that we know who you are and who we are voting for?
If you intend remaining silent about offshore oil exploration, disrespecting Knysna as you so often have, please resign so that you can be replaced by someone who cares enough about us to respond and act.
